Eye of the King

King parrots are frequent visitors to our garden. They steal our pomegranates and are regular 'clients' at the bird feeding station. It's fun to observe the different characters of the King and his Queen. He may have the more striking feathers, but she is definitely the boss! So often she will bully him until he gives in as she pushes him away from the best bird block. Some years the couple have princes and then the males take control and the Queen is outnumbered! But in the years when they have mainly princesses, the poor King is definitely hen-pecked. Then he will wait till almost dusk when the bird station is empty and sneak back for a quiet, solitary feed! If you don't have royal visits to your garden, one of the best places to watch King Parrots is in the Bunya Mountains in the South Burnett. At The Bunyas General Store and café they have several feeding times per day.

'Eye of the King' is one of several of my framed watercolours of King Parrots, Crimson Rosellas and Superb Fairy wrens which are now available at The Bunyas General Store. Printed greetings cards are also on sale there. The adjacent café is a great place for a coffee or a meal and a spot of bird-watching!
